Reporting an error in a calculation
These are the messages we most want to receive, and the ones we act on fastest. To let us check quickly, please include:
- The page you were using
- The figures you entered — gross pay, pay frequency, filing status, allowances, deductions
- The result the calculator gave
- The result you expected, and where it came from — a pay stub, a published table, another calculator
If a number here disagrees with your actual pay stub, that is worth reporting even if you are not certain which is wrong. The most common explanations are a benefit deduction that was not entered, a Form W-4 on file that differs from what the employee remembers submitting, or an employer that rounds withholding to whole dollars — but sometimes it is us, and we would rather know.
Telling us a rate has changed
Illinois and federal payroll figures are updated on a fixed calendar, but announcements do not always arrive on schedule. If you have seen a new IDOR bulletin, an IDES rate notice, a minimum wage ordinance or an IRS release before we have, send the link and we will update.
What we cannot do
We are not able to give personal tax, legal or financial advice, review your return, tell you how many allowances to claim, or intervene in a dispute with an employer, the Illinois Department of Revenue or the IRS. For those, the right people are:
- Illinois income tax questions — Illinois Department of Revenue, 1-800-732-8866, or tax.illinois.gov
- Unemployment claims — Illinois Department of Employment Security, ides.illinois.gov
- Unpaid wages, minimum wage or overtime — Illinois Department of Labor, labor.illinois.gov
- Federal tax questions — IRS, 1-800-829-1040, or irs.gov
- Wage garnishment or consumer debt — Illinois Legal Aid Online or the legal aid organization serving your county
Suggesting a calculator
If there is an Illinois payroll or tax calculation you keep needing and cannot find a reliable tool for, tell us. Several of the tools on this site started as reader requests.
